Map
of Brittany, in the far Western side of France.
In
the Brocéliande forest, you'll find the
castle of Comper.
The legend
says 'Lancelot of the Lake' was born here and was educated by Vivian,
some magician also called the 'Lady of the Lake', before joining 'King
Arthur' in order to find the 'Holy Grail' with the other knights.
The
Castle of Fougères, city
where Chateaubriand's sister used to live. The castle built in the 12th
century has 13 towers. It was a strategic place in Brittany.
View
of the wall and towers of
Fougères castle. The
neighborhouds have inspired Victor Hugo (Quatre-vingt treize) and Balzac
(Les Chouans). 'Les chouans' were peasants who didn't admit the French
Revolution and prefered aristocracy. They were silenced in some blood
bath you can easily imagine.
The
Castle of Josselin
on early morning. It belonged to the Rohan family during the 15th century.
The
Castle of Vitré. It
was re-built in the 15th century to protect the rich merchand city against
french invasions.
Brittany
is although the place of 'Menhir', giant stone collections, for example
at
Carnac.
These dressed stones are 3000 years old. Of you course, you could prefer
the beautiful sand beaches of Carnac...
The
Castle of Suscinio. Summer
hunting residence of the Ducs de Bretagne. The castle is surrounded by
swamps and just near the see.
Some beautiful
window. It reminds me to a song in some Philip Glass Opera: the Window
of Appearances...
You can see some exhibitions inside the castle.
You
can easily imagine yourself as some knight in such environment...
The
Fortress Of Largoët.
The Dungeon is 44 meters high. The walls are 9 meters wide. Henri Tudor,
before being king of England was held prisonner is that dungeon.
